There are six species of owls known to breed in Maine. While most of these species are nocturnal, only the Short-eared Owl is active by daylight. Some species such as the Great Horned Owl and Barred Owl are widespread, while others including the Eastern Screech Owl has only a limited range within the state.

Like nightjars, Maine's owl species are well camouflaged to blend into their roosting sites by day. During the breeding season, owls perform a number of distinct vocalizations. Click the bios below to learn more.
